Please, Don't Drink and Drive

A couple months ago a DJ on my favourite radio station read this. I only thought of putting this on b/c last night I was thinking of a friend that was killed by a drunk driver.

Someone Should Have Taught Him:

Mom,
I went to a birthday party but I remembered what you said.
You told me not to drink at all, so I had a sprite instead.
I felt proud of myself, the way you said I would,
That I didn't choose to drink and drive,
though some friends said I should.
I knew I made a healthy choice and your advice to me was right
As the party finally ended and the kids drove out of sight.
I got into my car, sure to get home in one piece,
Never knowing what was coming, something I expected least.
Now I'm lying on the pavement, I can hear the policemen say,
"The kid that caused this wreck was drunk."
His voice seems far away.
My own blood is all around me, as I try hard not to cry.
I can here the paramedic say, "This girls is going to die."
I'm sure the guy had no idea, while he was flying high,
Because he chose to drink and drive, that I would have to die.
So why do people do it, knowing that it ruins lives?
Now the pain is cutting me like a hundred stabbing knives.
Tell my sister not to be afraid, tell daddy to be brave.
And when I go to heaven to put "Daddy's Little Girl" on my grave.
Someone should have taught him that it's wrong to drink and drive.
Maybe if his mom and dad had I'd still be alive.
My breath is getting shorter, I'm getting really scared.
These are my final moments, and I'm so unprepared.
I wish you could hold me mom, as I lie here and die.
I wish that I could say I love you and good-bye.

Please don't drink and drive!

  1. Sad poem. I think that I've read it somewhere before too.

  2. Man, we couldn't believe it! Today, Puppet and I were watching this (lame) advice show (that we love to hate!) on NBC called The Doctors. The program's opening featured a group of proud-of-themselves mothers of toddlers, pushing their "wonderful" and innovative playgroup activity: while their little ones play, the moms uncork and drink wine! And the insane panel of doctors condoned their behavior! I was hoping some members of MADD were in the audience to set the record straight and advocate for the little kids who would have to count on their buzzed mamas to get them home from their play dates, but it didn't happen. We were beyond appalled! (A film clip actually showed a couple of the moms toasting, their to-the-brim-filled wine glasses clinking the tippy cups in their children's hands. Now that's what I call setting an example. In this instance, I'm proud to be considered the party pooper, as I found the whole segment pretty upsetting to see.) Like I said: UNBELIEVABLE.
